Yikes is right, I’ve made some mistakes. I’m reading ‘Create Your Writer Platform’ by Chuck Sambuchino and it’s a bit overwhelming. I’m not that far into it and it’s making me feel like I’m so far behind I’ll never catch up.
First mistake I made, I didn’t keep up with my online platform after I first build it a few years ago. I let it lapse and let my following fall away. Slapping both hands with a ruler as I type. Bad Shannon.
But I was busy working for a living, writing, and taking care of my 2 kids, and rebuilding my life after my marriage fell apart.
No matter the reason, I should have kept it up in order to have more success by now. A writer in today’s world will fade or publish based on their ability to continually build on their platform in a meaningful way. I now have to breathe life into some dead parts and build parts that could have been done ages ago.
Second mistake was not getting my domain name, my social media and website focused on me, the author. Instead I focused most of my efforts on the marketing of my book THIRTEEN.
Less scary marketing a product over oneself. It leaves an author feeling more vulnerable if they market themselves directly instead of their product. It’s easier to sell for a company and hear no than it is to sell your self and hear no.
Ah that didn’t come out right, but I think you get the gist.
Third, I didn’t take into account how valuable virtual relationships are. Personally, I have a hard time building virtual connections with people I’ve never met in the real world. Heck, I have a hard time building real world connections because I’m an introvert disguised as an extrovert. These connections, virtual and real, will make or break you.
l haven’t gotten that far into the book yet. I’m sure I’ll find more mistakes as I go, which will completely deflate my ego. The good news is that everything I did before is still there. I can build on it and bring it all together on my website. If you are writing a book and you want to publish, the best thing to do is to get building that following now.
